WINDHAM, Conn., January 14, 2014 – Windham Public Schools’ Superintendent Ortiz has appointed Ms. Angela Kiss, Principal of Sweeney Elementary school, to the position of Interim Principal at Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy. This appointment comes following the resignation of Principal Jeff Wihbey. 300 students ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade currently attend Barrows.
“The appointment of Ms. Kiss will ensure a smooth transition as Principal Wihbey prepares to leave the district”, stated Superintendent Ortiz. “Ms. Kiss is well respected and familiar with our staff, students and families. She is committed to the success of Windham.”
Kiss will continue to hold the position of Principal at Sweeney elementary and divide her time between the two schools. Both Sweeney and Barrows will also gain an interim assistant principal for additional support. Current staff members at the respective schools will fill both interim assistant principal positions.
Kiss has extensive experience in Windham schools with a track record of academic excellence and exceptional leadership capabilities. Kiss has served Windham since 1974 when she was fist hired as an elementary teacher. In 1986 she was appointed to the position of Instructional Consultant at Sweeney Elementary and then became the Principal in 1992. In addition to her work as a teacher and administrator, she has served as President of the Windham Association of Administrators for several years and has earned several awards of recognition for her excellent work as an educator.
Ms. Kiss will work closely with Mr. Wihbey over the coming weeks to ensure a seamless transition in school leadership. She will officially begin serving as Interim Principal on February 6, 2014.
The search for a permanent Principal at Barrows will begin immediately with the intention of filling the position hopefully before the end of the 2013-14 school year.
