July 30, 2012 –Charter Oak Federal Credit Union has announced that 38 employees have recently been CPR/AED trained and certified, and in addition, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) have been installed in 9 of 12 Charter Oak branches. As a result, all 12 Charter Oak branches now have access to AEDs.
Charter Oak recognizes that having a strong chain of survival in place can drastically improve the chances of survival when an event occurs. “We made CPR/AED training available to all employees and are equipped to provide AED demonstrations to new employees as well as existing employees who would like to refresh their skills,” said Brian Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer.
Deciding to install the AEDs was a decision made by Charter Oak’s Board of Directors and Senior Staff members, and fortunately did not stem from an ill-fated situation. AEDs have been installed at 32 Chicago Avenue and 625 Long Hill Road in Groton; 3 Boston Post Road in Waterford; 20 Liberty Street in Pawcatuck; 589 Hartford Pike in Dayville; 335 Main Street in Niantic; One Connecticut Avenue in Norwich; 893 Main Street in Willimantic; and 601 Norwich New London Turnpike in Montville.
According to the American Heart Association, a victim’s chance of survival drops by 7 to 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat isn’t restored. With that in mind, Charter Oak decided to prominently place AEDs in the branch lobbies, where they can easily be accessed. AEDs can be used by anybody in an emergency situation.
